AI anxiety: the new burnout driver of 2026
A new fear has moved into the office
Grow Therapy released its 2026 workplace mental health report in April with a data point that was not there last year: 13% of employees spontaneously mention anxiety about how AI will affect their role as a direct driver of their burnout. That is roughly one in every eight people carrying that weight.
Pew Research adds context: 72% of US adults report being worried about the economic impact of AI.
Who is feeling it worst
Middle managers. They see the coordination layer that justified their role starting to be automated.
Marketing and content teams. They have spent two years watching free tools do in thirty seconds what used to take them an afternoon.
Admin, back office, junior legal. Repetitive, documented, automatable tasks.
Customer support. The first sector where AI-linked layoffs are already visible.
Where the anxiety comes from
Fear of direct replacement. Less common than the press suggests, but real.
Fear of forced retraining. Many do not fear losing the job, they fear the job turning into something they did not choose.
Fear of algorithmic evaluation. Systems tracking productivity, call tone, response times.
What HR is getting wrong
Corporate silence. The company talks about "transformation" in the all-hands and then no one answers concrete questions.
Vague announcements. "AI will help us be more efficient" means nothing.
Opaque roadmaps. New tools get announced without explaining which tasks they absorb.
What actually works
Real transparency about the AI roadmap.
A training plan with real budget and hours built into the workday.
A clear policy on AI-driven layoffs. A public commitment to not reduce headcount through automation for X months immediately lowers ambient anxiety.
Real listening channels. Not one annual survey, but something more frequent and anonymous.
Emotional check-ins as radar
AI anxiety is rarely said out loud in a meeting. It shows up in patterns: sustained energy drops in a specific team, offhand comments about "learning new things outside work", a rise in anxiety-related sick leave among admin profiles.
